Campervan trips in the Baltic States: 5 recommendations where to go!

Summer is a time for holidays, spent in different ways. Some like to travel the world, exploring and tasting the culture of other countries. Others choose to stay here in Latvia to enjoy the picturesque landscapes, active leisure opportunities and warm evenings in nature.

If you want to experience as much as possible and preserve some memorable moments, we recommend a campervan trip. Rent a campervan gives you the freedom and flexibility to enjoy your trip without limits, choosing the most beautiful stops and the pace of your journey as you wish. Find out more about the advantages of this vehicle and why you should choose the Baltic States as your destination!

Baltics – colourful, rich, diverse

The Baltic States are a great travel destination offering a wide range of leisure and entertainment options for everyone. Picturesque coastal landscapes with sandy beaches, rugged cliffs, untamed natural magic in forests and marshes, and the list goes on and on. Riga, Vilnius and Tallinn are enchanting with their historical charm and diverse cultural life, preserving real architectural gems.

Exciting itineraries, unique sights, pleasant climate and lower costs are some of the key benefits of travelling to neighbouring countries or spending the summer here in Latvia.

Travelling across the Baltic by campervan

Travelling by campervan offers a number of important advantages and adds a special magic to the journey, especially if the itinerary has not been planned down to the finest detail.

Travelling by campervan is comfortable, enjoyable and unforgettable. It gives you a sense of freedom, because you are in charge of planning your own route, deciding where to go and what to see.

A motorhome is literally a “house on wheels”, providing all the amenities for a comfortable living. It is equipped with beds, a kitchenette, a stove and fridge, a bathroom with shower and toilet. Some models still have heating and air conditioning. This means that you can move around in your motorhome all year round, whatever the weather.

But before embarking on new adventures, we recommend planning at least a few key points along the route and, in particular, places to stay. There are many different campervan sites, both in towns and closer to nature. Campervans can be parked:

  • in designated parks and campsites. These places usually have access to electricity, water and a place to dispose of rubbish. Other sites also provide laundry facilities;
  • National and nature parks. Many parks have special pitches for caravans, but you need to check if there are any rules on how long you can stay, whether you need to book in advance, etc;
  • in parking areas. It is also allowed to park in urban car parks, but to avoid any unpleasant incidents you should make sure you read the rules of the car park you choose beforehand, as they may have restrictions – time limits, the need to register the number plate or even parking fees.

To find out where the caravan parks are, you can use the StayFree Vanlife app, for example. It brings together user-recommended and rated sites, as well as caravan parks that are breathtakingly beautiful without being crowded. Some of the most popular campervan parks right here in our area are in the holiday complexes “Mērsrags”, “Zviedru cepure”, “Abragciems”, “Ežezeri”, etc.

However, the availability of caravan parks has also been considered in both other Baltic States. There are pitches by the sea, lakes, rivers, nature parks, cities, suburbs.

Places to go

We’ve selected 5 places in the Baltics that are definitely worth visiting. Especially if you are a nature lover and prefer to spend your holidays outdoors – in the fresh air.

Grey or Death Dunes in Lithuania

They are a unique attraction as they are considered to be the highest sand dunes in Europe (total height of 60 m). The dunes are located between Pervalka and Juodkrante. The name is due to the fact that 4 villages and 2 cemeteries were once buried under the dunes. This walking area offers the same sensations as walking in the desert in other parts of the world.

Druskininkai resort town in Lithuania

It is famous for its mineral springs, as well as for its many spa centres and sanatoriums, where you can enjoy complete rest and relaxation. Druskininkai offers a wide range of active leisure and entertainment options. For example, you can explore the town on foot or by bicycle. Younger travellers will love the chance to visit the water park.

Hiiumaa Island in Estonia

It is the second largest island in Estonia, characterised by lighthouses and spectacular scenery. The island is home to Kepu Lighthouse, the oldest in the Baltics (built around 500 years ago). When you reach the top, you have a wonderful view of the surrounding forest.

While you’re there, we recommend you take a taste tour of Estonia’s traditional cuisine. It’s no coincidence that in 2015 the island won a competition for the best Estonian tourist destination to enjoy excellent and authentic food.

Veczemju cliffs in Latvia

The most impressive group of sandstone cliffs on the Vidzeme coast is a unique natural monument located between Rankuļrags and Cape Kutkája. Here you can enjoy exclusive peace, quiet and picturesque natural landscapes, including unforgettable sunrises and sunsets.

Daugavas loki Nature Park in Latvia

The Daugava loki are the oldest valley formations in Latvia, preserving cultural and historical values and unique natural landscapes of the upper Daugava valley between Naujene and Krāslava. In the territory of the Nature Park you can see several important cultural and historical monuments: the Daugava Valley, Vecpils Castle Hill, Juzefova Manor Park and others.

The spectacular view of the Daugava River arches was also depicted on the 10 lats banknote.
